A HEAVY HITCHHIKE AND A SKETCHY BOAT RIDE AND WE HAD ARRIVED…. JURASSIC PARK AIN’T GOT NOTHING ON MILFORD SOUND!

Heading out with two of my best friends, we where all fully stoked on the idea of getting amongst the nature for a few days. After finishing long stretches of work, we where ready for some well deserved freedom. What can i say this was a journey of a lifetime, i know its cliche but i really really mean it, Milford Sound is like a place no other, Untouched by the hands of time, the area holds an immense sense of purity, Locked in within the silver ferns and karst peaks is an energy, a force, a special kind of feeling of absolute peace.

Home to a handful of fishermen and a selection of seasonal staff the areas main economies are almost entirely based around fishing and tourism. Don’t be fooled by this description though the road network is boss! and the trail network is even better! Milford is a pristine playground with all the right connections.

Most of the wilderness trails in the area are accessible only by boat thankfully there is a good service available and rides are available all through the summer season.

The waters in the area are teaming with wildlife, and along our journey we where even followed by a pod of dolphins.

After reaching the start of the milford track we where greeted by an empty trail with not a tourist in site.

After checking out the map we where on our way…..

Feeling as if we hadn’t stopped floating since we had reached the boat. We continued to float along through the forest along the narrow track, stopping to cross what seemed like an obscene amount of bridges I felt like a real life Indiana Jones. The track continued to surprise and inspire.

The Climate is Temperate in most areas except for in the high passes where it is most Definitely alpine. So be sure to pack some heavy duty gear, and be prepared for all four seasons in one single day!

As regards places to stay there are two options. Firstly wild camp. There are plenty of good spots for camping right along the track so if your keen on carrying the extra weight and are searching for complete nature this is a good option.

Secondly the magic huts! NZ have got a completely amazing network of mountain huts dotted across most of there major trails and the milford track is no exception!
